Today we spoke with breeding expert Christoph Bauer, who has been part of the Tebbel team since autumn 2019, about breeder emotions and plans for next year…
• It certainly happens that a foal doesn’t turn out quite as the breeder had hoped when choosing the mate. What do you do then?
Christoph Bauer : The very best thing to do is to be honest. Then I say honestly: The pairing didn’t work, we’ll do it differently next time. Only if you don’t beat around the bush in such a case will breeders have long-term trust.
• You encounter breeders every day – how much of a role do emotions still play in horse breeding today?
CB : An incredible amount. In our sport and also in breeding, everything ultimately results from emotions and gut decisions. And that’s a good thing. That’s what makes the professions surrounding horses so unique!
• Speaking of emotions: You’ve been at the Tebbel stallion station for a year now and are fully involved. What fascinates you about this job?
CB : For me, it’s clearly the whole package that makes our operation so special. From foals to raising young horses, all the way to top-level sport, plus the support we provide to breeders before, during, and after the breeding season. The best thing, though, is when you’ve recommended a pairing and the following year a top foal is born – there’s nothing better!
• There’s something you’re particularly looking forward to next year. What is it?
CB : Yes, that’s right. We had two days of foal branding this year, which went very well. One day was unfortunately a bit rainy, but otherwise, it was great. Nevertheless, we want to raise the bar even higher for our breeders in 2021. With our partners, friends, and long-time associates of the Tebbel Stallion Station, we will offer our breeders an even better platform. We want to further enhance the event for you, not least by holding foal championships on both days, which will be well-endowed with cash and in-kind prizes.
We will present both days, for the Oldenburg breeders as well as for the Westphalian breeders, with the same program and an expanded stage for the foals. The entire Tebbel team is already working towards these two days to show our breeders the greatest appreciation and offer the very best service.
